Lasik Eye Surgery
A LASIK treatment is the correction of refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism with an excimer laser. This method is also known as “eye cutting”. Myopia means near-sightedness and hyperopia long-sightedness. Astigmatism, on the other hand, is a crooked and distorted view, because the light shining on the eye, falls on several points of the retina. Astigmatism can result from the cornea (the translucent layer in front of the colored area of the eye) or the eye lens. During eye laser surgery, the cornea is reshaped with the laser in order to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
Am I suitable for a LASIK operation?
People who are at least 18 years old and who have not experienced any changes in the refractive error within the last year are a potential candidate for this treatment. But whether a LASIK surgery can be carried out or not depends on a detailed eye exam. During an eye laser examination, the thickness, grade and biomechanical strength of the cornea, which is to be operated on, are evaluated, and it is examined whether there is a condition that could prevent surgery, such as keratoconus (a progressive disease in which the transparent layer, the cornea, in the eye bends forward and becomes thinner), cataract or dry eyes syndrome. It also assesses whether you are cross-eyed and with a detailed retinal examination it is examined whether there are cracks or holes in the retina. If cracks and/or holes are found in the retina, a retinal specialist must evaluate the patient. Nowadays it is possible with a LASIK surgery to treat myopia with a diopter value below 10 and astigmatism and hyperopia with a value below 6.
At the Lasik Center in Turkey, excimer laser and femtosecond lasers are used to perform LASIK surgery for the treatment of astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia. In our center, doctors with specialized training in the field of laser and intraocular lens perform your surgery. Whether you are suitable for laser surgery and which laser is used for you will be determined after a detailed examination.
Who is not suitable for LASIK-surgery?
In patients with structural defects of the cornea (keratoconus, corneal dystrophy, which means that the cornea is genetically cloudy, etc.),
- If the corneal thickness is insufficient for surgery,
- If severe dry eye syndrome or
- eye pressure (glaucoma) is present
- a LASIK-surgery cannot be performed.
In addition to that, LASIK-surgery should not be performed in cases of uncontrolled diabetes, connective tissue diseases such as rheumatism, in HIV-positive patients and in pregnant or breastfeeding women (as hormones have an effect on the cornea).

For patients wearing contact lenses, contact lenses should be discontinued prior to LASIK examination and surgery. This duration is 1 week for soft contact lenses and 2 weeks for hard contact lenses. If there is any burring or stinging in the eye before the planned operation, the patient must inform his doctor.
What should be done on the day of the LASIK-surgery?
On the day of the LASIK surgery, female patients should not wear make-up. Because the surgery is performed under topical anesthetics (drops), the patient does not have to fast before. A light meal is appropriate.
Stages of LASIK-surgery
The patient does not feel any pain during laser surgery, but the feeling of touch remains and therefore pressure can be felt for a short time during the procedure. The operation takes place on both eyes respectively. The stages of the procedure are as follows:
First, your eye is numbed with anesthetic drops. The eyelids and surrounding area are disinfected and covered with an adhesive sterile blanket. Although this blanket covers part of your face, you can still breathe freely. To keep your eyes open during the operation, the eyelids are opened with a device. With an automatic device (microkeratome) a fine flap of your cornea is lifted. Since a vacuum is applied to your eye in this step, you will not be able to see anything for a short while. The corneal tissue under the flap is reshaped with the laser. The flap is then placed on the newly shaped cornea, which concludes the surgery. Then you will be given antibiotic eye drops. Lastly the device holding your eyelids open will be removed. The surgery lasts about a total of 10-15 Mınutes for both eyes.

After LASIK-surgery
3-4 hours after the operation, you may feel a burning sensation, stinging or pain in your eyes, or have a watery or cloudy vision. Protection goggles are used on the day of the operation. Your doctor will prescribe you eye drops with antibiotics and cortisone and tear drops. Routine check-ups take place on the first day after the operation, after 1 month and after 3 months.
Possible complications after LASIK-surgery
Remaining diopter strength: Refractive errors can vary depending on the degree. Your doctor will inform you about this topic prior to surgery.
- Blood accumulation in the eye: This can be due to the vacuum applied during the operation and disappears after about 1 month. Eye pain does not occur.
- Diffuse lamellar keratitis: This is an allergic reaction. This is treated by more frequent use of the eye drops or an eye wash with serum.
- Dry eyes: After the surgery, dryness of the eye can occur for a while, but this is treated with teardrops.
- Ectasia: This develops in eyes that have been treated with a laser, although their corneal thickness and topography are not suitable for such a procedure. However, this may, albeit very rarely, occur after a laser surgery, even if the corneal thickness and structure are adequate.
- After a LASIK-surgery, it is also possible to perform a cataract operation in elderly people. LASIK-surgery does not prevent any other necessary future eye surgery.
Things to be observed after Eye Laser Treatment
Do not rub your eyes or shower or bath within the first 24 hours after surgery. You can resume your daily life after 24 hours. Regularly do the check-ups recommend by your doctor.
How is astigmatism or myopia corrected with a laser treatment? With LASIK treatment, the goal is to completely correct astigmatism or myopia. Values below 0.50 after LASIK-surgery are considered successful because the patient no longer requires glasses. However, higher diopter values may remain in patients with very high myopia or astigmatism values. Your doctor will inform you about this topic.

How is hyperopia corrected with a laser treatment?
With LASIK treatment, the goal is to completely correct hyperopia with values below 6. Values below 0.50 after surgery are considered successful because the patient no longer requires glasses. Compared to myopia and astigmatism treatment, hyperopia treatment has a slightly lower success rate. Therefore, it is possible for a diopter value to remain or increase again over time. Your doctor will inform you about this topic.
