What is an IOL?

A highly impaired eye can be corrected by an intraocular lens (IOL). This procedure does not involve a laser on contrary to PRK, lasek and lasik methods; the eye is directly operated. Thus, it is possible to correct a highly impaired eye. IOL can also be used for many types of impairments related to refraction as well as in cases where it is impossible to use conventional laser treatment. Such cases are

⦁  Myopia and hypermetropia, moderate to severe
⦁  A thin cornea layer
⦁  Dry eye

For who is the IOL method suitable?

If your myopia is between -10.0 and – 20.0 dioptry or your hypermetropia is between + 4 and +8, this method is suitable for you. Astigmatism can be corrected by IOL if it is not higher than + 4 dioptry.

How is IOL procedure performed?

In this method, an artificial lens is placed over the natural lens of the eye. The eye needs to be opened for this procedure. The side of the cornea is incised. The artificial lens is fixed in the iris or the edge of anterior chamber of the eye. The incision is either spontaneously closed or stitched after placing the lens.

What are the advantages?

⦁ Since an IOL is small and soft, it can be injected into your eye in a few seconds with no pain by making a small incision on the cornea in your eye. The injected IOL takes the required position in the fluid between your iris and natural lens. The lens will be easily accepted by your body.
⦁ An IOL is invisible: An IOL functions as a contact lens. The only difference is that the lens is placed inside your eye instead of the eye surface. The lens is invisible. You or another person may notice the lens is inside your eye because your eye starts to recover. You cannot see or feel the lens once it has been placed inside your eye.
⦁ An IOL is removable: The lens should always remain in the eye. A lens can be removed only when required because it doesn’t change any parts in the eye or cornea.
⦁ IOL is not limited as a laser treatment: An IOL is able to correct your visual impairment even if it is highly progressed. An IOL can also be used in thin corneas, dry eyes, or treatment of large pupils.
⦁ An IOL provides a high quality of vision. It is quite definitive and predictable treatment method and ensures a high customer satisfaction.

What are the complications (unexpected adverse events)?

If any changes in degree of your visual impairment are detected during your annual eye examination, the IOL can be removed or replaced by a new one. The lens does not treat the presbyopy or remove the need for use of reading glasses occurring with age.
